AUSTINTOWN, Ohio (WKBN)- A program dedicated to educating the public about the criminal justice system is making its return for its second year.

The People’s Law School is open for registration, offering a wide range of topics as well as interactive engagement.

The Mahoning County Prosecutor’s Office is once again hosting the  People’s Law School program in hopes of educating the public about local  government and law. The program will be a seven week long course  addressing topics such as DUIs, felony prosecution, plea bargaining, and  more.

A segment on marijuana law has also been added to this year’s course.  Mahoning County Prosecutor Lynn Maro says the topics are based on  feedback of more than 100 participants from last year’s program.

“If you can attend, overwhelmingly we give evaluation sheets out. We  get feedback on what topics seem to be more interesting, which topics  people didn’t really appreciate as much, so we want people involved, and  we want their feedback,” Maro said.

This year’s sessions are focused on feedback from last year’s  participants, highlighting discussions around constitutional  and OVI laws, wills and estates, plea bargaining and more.

She says the goal of the program is to connect citizens with local  government and educate them one-on-one for a more personal experience.

“I think it is the best way that one-on-one, standing up there  talking to them, as opposed to a post or an article, that interaction  really gets them involved in thinking and a better understanding of the  concepts,” Maro said.

The program will be held on seven consecutive Tuesdays beginning  September 15th and ending October twenty-seventh at the Austintown  Senior Center. Registration is completely free and opens at noon on  August 17. You can register on the Mahoning County Prosecutor website.
